(October 7, 2025) ē Forsyth Technical Community College, in partnership with the organization (Reynolds), is proud to announce the launch of the Future-Ready Workforce Alliance, a bold new initiative designed to close the skills gap, prepare workers for in-demand jobs, and strengthen the economy in Forsyth and Stokes Counties and across the region.

The Future-Ready Workforce Alliance is a collaborative effort uniting education, business, and community partners to tackle one of the region’s most urgent challenges — the shortage of skilled workers. Nearly half of adults aged 25–44 in Forsyth and Stokes Counties lack a degree or credential, limiting their access to higher-wage jobs and impacting the ability of local employers to grow. The Alliance will address this gap by offering fast, targeted training programs aligned with the needs of the region’s most critical industries, including health sciences, transportation and logistics, advanced manufacturing, and technology.

As the founding partner, Reynolds has played a critical role in bringing this initiative to life.

Through the Alliance, jobseekers, and current employees will have access to customized, flexible education pathways that combine classroom learning with real-world experience. This approach allows participants to start working quickly, continue their education while employed, and advance their careers over time. Employers benefit by developing and retaining a skilled, reliable workforce — a solution designed to meet the evolving needs of business and industry.

“The Future-Ready Workforce Alliance will unlock potential and help people change the trajectory of their lives while giving employers a reliable, work-ready talent pipeline,” said Dr. Janet Spriggs, President of Forsyth Tech. “We are grateful to for serving as our founding partner and helping make this vision a reality.”

“At Reynolds, we believe that investing in people is the key to building stronger businesses and more resilient communities,” said Shay Mustafa, Chief Communications Officer, Inc. “As the founding partner of the Future-Ready Workforce Alliance, we’re taking action to shape the future of work and strengthen our region’s talent pipeline. We invite other companies to join us in this effort—because a future-ready workforce benefits us all.”

By prioritizing educational attainment and economic mobility, the Future-Ready Workforce Alliance enhances workplace benefits at Reynolds and opportunities for employees to learn and grow with the company,” said Mark Owens, President & CEO of Greater Winston-Salem, Inc. “With this initiative, Inc. and Forsyth Tech are setting an example that innovative and collaborative solutions can set us apart and provide benefits to employers, workers and job seekers, and the community as a whole. This program is another example of each institution’s leadership and community impact as they celebrate 150 years and 65 years respectively.”

Forsyth Tech and Reynolds are inviting additional employers and community partners to join the Alliance and be part of building a national model for workforce development. This collaboration represents a shared commitment to creating opportunity, supporting business growth, and shaping a stronger future for the entire community.

Utilizing the latest technology, it captures a combined wastewater stream from the plant, treats it to North Carolina reclaim water standards, and then reintroduces it as intake water for the factory utilities—reducing the intake of fresh, valuable drinking water at the facility.

“Today marks a significant milestone in Reynolds’ sustainability journey and demonstrates our long-term commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Bernd Meyer, executive vice president of operations at the Reynolds organization. “With the WaterHub now operational, we expect to reduce water withdrawn at the Reynolds Operations Center by more than 40%, which in turn is anticipated to reduce water withdrawn across the global BAT Group by approximately 6%.”

Mayoral Proclamation and Historic Marker Dedication Recognize R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company’s 150th Anniversary Year /news/mayoral-proclamation-historic-marker-dedication-recognize-r-j-reynolds-tobacco-company-150th-anniversary/ Tue, 11 Feb 2025 19:48:03 +0000 http://www.reynoldsamerican.com/?post_type=news&p=3440 Continued]]> WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (FEB. 11, 2025) — Elected officials and business and community leaders joined representatives of the organization (Reynolds) today to mark the 150th anniversary of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with the unveiling of a historic marker at the site of “The Little Red Factory,” the original production facility where Richard Joshua (R.J.) Reynolds started the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1875. The Little Red Factory was located near what today is 111 North Chestnut Street in downtown Winston-Salem.

To acknowledge this significant milestone, Winston-Salem Mayor Joines issued a proclamation declaring February 11, 2025, as Reynolds 150th Celebration Day in Winston-Salem. This recognition celebrates the organization’s long-standing presence and contributions to the local community, Triad region, and the state of North Carolina.

“This humbling distinction fills us with enormous pride, and it would not have been possible without generations of outstanding employees and the support of this community.” said David Waterfield, President and CEO of Inc. “Reynolds’ journey is deeply intertwined with the city of Winston-Salem, and this anniversary is a special moment for our organization.”

Reynolds officials said the organization would recognize the 150th milestone for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, its largest operating company, throughout 2025. Today, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company is one of only 12 Consumer Packaged Goods companies operating in the U.S. that are 150 years or older and part of a publicly traded organization.

“The site of the first R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company factory is an important part of the beginning of Winston-Salem since it marks the birthplace of one of the most significant businesses in the city’s history,” said Mayor Joines, who could not attend the event in person. “R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company played a critical role in fueling the growth of Winston-Salem and putting the city on a path to becoming the vibrant community that we all enjoy today.”

“The significance of R.J. Reynolds and his wife Katharine to the history of Winston-Salem cannot be overstated,” Joines added. “When R.J. arrived in Winston in 1875, the town’s population stood at around 400, and today Winston-Salem is home to 254,000 residents.”

By early adulthood, R.J. Reynolds knew he wanted to start his own tobacco factory and decided to purchase land in Winston, given its access to the railroad. He purchased a 100-foot lot bordered by today’s Depot and Chestnut Street to construct a factory in Winston.

In the spring of 1875, R.J. Reynolds began manufacturing tobacco in the 4,500-square-foot factory constructed on the site. The factory, which was painted a distinctive bright red, became known as The Little Red Factory. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company was officially incorporated in North Carolina on February 11, 1890, a date Reynolds officials selected for today’s celebration.
